DO IT UP JER GOGO
The P42 parties won't be tournament focussed any longer. Now that GEEX is going to happen every year, we'll be making it more competition oriented. If JeR wants to run CS tournament in November, it's up to him, we'll provide the severs as always. I'll also try to get a prize lined up.
My thoughts are use the P42 event to get the seeds for the top six local teams..
Hmm so what does it mean when you say competition based? There won't be a tournament structure? Im confused
The focus won't be entirely on tounies, doesn't mean there won't be any, but we want to make them more fun and focus on casual play more.

Peno, we can do the seeding there if we want as well.
its an awful long time between P42 and Geex to be used as seeding dont you think?

Good point. We should probably not worry about seeding at this stage. Maybe in the future if international competition gets involved we'll do some prelim seeding a month or 2 before GEEX. Peno, any thoughts?

It's only the CS:S tourney that will be used for the seeds at this time.

FWIW, it was a long time from 2007's P42 to GEEX 2008, and JeR used the placement from those teams for the seeds.

As things progress further with GEEX and the tournament structure, the potential to seed beyond local teams will be looked at.
I think we should still do a tourney, with prizes, and use performance at p42, previous p42's and previous geex08's to determine seeding. That is how alot of the bigger competitions do it, and it would also provide the most accurate seeds!

Instead of just having p42 be the pre-1'st day of geex, why not have a tourney yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeey~
I would like if you would elaborate more on "The focus won't be entirely on tounies, doesn't mean there won't be any, but we want to make them more fun and focus on casual play more."

Will it be worth our while to go and participate?
CS will be the focused tourney, just to get the seeds for GEEX'09.

The other tournies will be "for fun". I'm leaning towards CoD 4 or TF2 (feedback from the community will determine which gets picked) as the second tourney. DotA will be there as well for the RTS tourney.
Past P42 parties have been designed around a tournament schedule and have been quite hectic at times. I'd like to be able to relax that schedule a bit and get more free play going and smaller contests and such. The Mt. Dew drinking is good, I'd like to get other contests going too so everyone gets to have fun, instead of just the refined teams in the tournies.
Well the spirit of competition is what drives us to p42! So a CS tourney is definately high on our list of interests.

Will GEEX be providing prize support for this years p42 like last time? Or are we back to yard-o-meats. haha Tongue
Yes, there will be competition, and there will be tournaments, all I'm saying is that I also want to involve those that don't play in the tournements.

And yes, GEEX has pledged support for this year, what that will be exactly I can't say, but it should be good.
I think sureshot should get a yard-o-meat in the exit chute just for being such great guys. Wink
Yard o Meat will feed my family for 30 days!
I think you should still do a few hardcore tourneys (CS, and maybe a a DOTA or something for those who want that) but also do some pick up/school yard rules tourneys. ie. TF2 draft/random player picks etc. Also maybe a few silly tourneys like UT2k4 mutant, a Bionic Commando Reamed DM, Death Match classic (or Warsow or Quake Live 16 man servers - everyone against everyone) etc. where there is still competition but its not like its hardcore CAL rules etc. and the prizes are more like shirts or movie tickets etc. This also encourages people to participate if there is at least something to win but its not a huge incentive to practices night and day for either. This makes it so the more casual players are more willing to play if they havent practiced.

The last P42 I focused pretty much entirely on UT2k4 IG tourney that I didnt get to play much else because it was more on the line etc. This year I probably wont unless someone picks me up on a good team for CS or TF2 that actually has a shot.
Dood, a random team TF2 tournament would be awesome! I think that is also a good idea, to have 2 tournaments, RTS and FPS, and then crap shoot the rest. Mainly because it seems that CS players will still play CS even when they're not in the tournaments... And they never change... So we can't eliminate the game from the tourney list.

Keep the ideas coming!
Hey now…..

Karma tried TF2 competitively for the first time at Geex and took 2nd place in the tournament. We also played for a few minutes in preparation for the finals, so your above statement isn’t entirely accurate.

I wouldn't be too concerned about seeding, at least for CSS. There is only about 4-5 local teams in the competitive CSS mix anyway. Unless you bring in external teams from out of state it is not an issue.

Finding the right balance between competitive and casual gamers is always difficult. I think having a few structured tournaments would keep the competitive players happy and a few casual tournaments would keep the casual gamers happy. I also think the prizes for the casual tournaments could be relatively small. I.E. Gift certificates, t-shirts, swag, etc.

When I was in college, I did a fund raising project and hit up local businesses in support of our project. I was amazed how easy it was to obtain gift certificates movie passes and other small donations if the company received credit. That might be something to think about. However, it does take a bit of leg work to accomplish.

By the way, everyone involved with Geex did a fantastic job. I’m looking forward to Geex 2009 at the southtown expo center. That’s a much better location in my opinion!!!

Karma.Viper
ah viper. I didnt mean it like that. I woulda played with ya but I couldn't with my work schedule. you shoulda came earlier to me and I coulda got time off of work. Part of the reason I didnt go to Geex was that it was a bit expensive for just a LAN and I didnt have a team until it was too late anyway. You can still hit me up anytime for other tourneys.

What I meant was, for P42, unless I already have a good team and incentive to really try, Id prefer to just kick it and play more pickup style tourneys for fun. Last P42 we did have a good shot and came relatively close to winning the IG tourney, but that was the only reason I worked so hard on it.

oh and PS: I do intend to go to Geex next year.
Viper, no disrespect, just an observation...

So we'll work on 2 primary tournaments and some random tournaments for other games. As long a JeR wants to host it, CSS will be one of the tournament games, and since we have more and more people picking up DotA, we'll most likely keep that going as well.

As for the other tournaments, a random pick TF2 match would be some crazy fun, we'll come up with some basic rules. I also want to keep the TrackMania endurance tournament going. We could do some old school Nintendo games, like best time on the first level of SMB, or highest number of extra guys awarded on level 4, etc... Keep the ideas coming, and lets make p42 some awesome fun. Big Grin
You're actually right. 90-95% of the time that's all CSS players play at a lan. Why would you play anything else if you are already playing the best competitive game? :-) You should have a Guitar Hero 4 world tour tournament at the next lan party. I think that would go over pretty well. That would also be a great tournament since 4 people can play at once. I also think a random TF2 tournament would be really fun. Some leagues are also playing 8v8 which you might want to consider for more chaotic battles.

Old school Nintendo Game Ideas

Contra - Whoever can make it the furthest on 3 lives. NO CHEATS
Mike Tyson's Punch Out - You know you can't beat Mike Tyson!!!!
Techmo Bowl - Great football Game
Dr. Mario - Classic
Tetris - Classic

Keep up the great work Powder, I'm looking forward to P42 and Geex.
back in my tfc days.. we did 6v6 and 8v8.. the 8v8 matches were just insane.. lots of carnage, but fun.. With GEEX08 there were only 6 machines per team, but I'm down for increasing to 8v8 at P42/GEEX09.
8v8 would be crazy with random teams, it would surely make it more enjoyable, since you are bound to have half a team with good players. Tongue Oh, and BTW, the teams would have to be picked by the staff, that way it is really random, no school yard elimination/fat kid out kind of thing...

Guitar Hero is possible, we've been tossing around the idea of setting up some consoles, maybe 2 or 4 on projectors..., haven't decided yet.
Sweet deal guys, sounds great!

Yeah if it pans out like you guys are saying i think p42 will definately be a worthwhile event this year.

I can't speak for the other cs players, but I would definately be down to play some TF2. I even bought the game already before geex in case any of my teammates wanted to mess around or put a team together.
