hey all,
I have a 500GB HD partitioned into 3 segments. My boot disk is full and I need more space. How can I chop 10G's off one partition and add it to the boot drive? Thanks for any help!
You can use Partition Magic (cost $$), Acronis Disk Director (better but also costs $$), or you can use Diskpart (built into windows,
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/300415 Very user unfriendly and you can easily nuke yer system).
I'd recommend just changing the location of large system files and temp directories to another disk or partition. The page file is by default at least as large as the amount of ram you have (i.e. if you have 2 GB of RAM, it'll eat 2GB of space). Also, disable hybernation if you don't use it, this will also free up the same amount of space as the amount of RAM in your system. Moving your internet temp files and windows temp directories can save some space as well, depending on how much you use the internet and other services that store files in the temp folders (winzip, nero, windows cd burner thinger, etc...). Delete any uninstall information left over from windows updates. If you have XP, with SP2, there are about 100 or so updates that have been installed, if you update regularly, each one of those takes up a few MB or more. If you've installed a service pack or 2, that will also take up about 500 MB each. These files are in your Windows directory and are hidden with the $ symbol. You'll need to change your folder options to view hidden files and all that.
Hope that helps.

I tried using diskpart. I successfully shrank volume/partition (4) by 10GB. When I try to extend volume/partition (2), it says "There is not enough usable free space on specified disk(s) to extend the volume." I only have one disk BTW.
??
you may have to use partition magic or acronis to do it.
diskpart sucks.
The partitions need to be next to each other in order to grow into each other. So if your drive is divided like this...
|...C...|....D.....|........E.........|
And you take off some of E, that space will only be available to D. And it should be filling up the volume from left to right, so you may need to use a visual tool like Acronis (much better than Partition Magic) to shift the volume(s) over. You can get the trial of Acronis and it will let you see what you can do, but it won't let you apply it unless you buy it (or find a key

).
